NEW DELHI – With the deadline for shifting to the newly launched Unified Pension Scheme ending on Nov. 30, only 122,123 government employees have joined the scheme, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said Monday. This includes new joinees, existing employees, and retirees, the minister said in a written reply in Lok Sabha.
The Unified Pension Scheme, which came into effect on Apr. 1, was launched in response to persistent demand from central government employees for an assured pension scheme. The government initially set the deadline to switch to the new pension scheme as Jun. 30, but later extended it to Sept. 30 and then to Nov. 30 due to muted response. At the end of the September deadline, only about 75,000 employees, or less than 3%, had opted for the Unified Pension Scheme, Informist had reported.
The government has allowed its employees who opted for the Unified Pension Scheme a one-time facility to revert to the National Pension System at any time during their service, the minister said. However, this facility will not be permitted in cases of removal, dismissal, or compulsory retirement as a penalty, or where disciplinary proceedings are ongoing or contemplated.
In November, Informist reported that, despite repeated extensions and multiple awareness campaigns, the government had failed to persuade central government staff to switch to the much-touted Unified Pension Scheme. According to NPS Trust, there are currently 2.92 million central government subscribers under the National Pension System. End
