Banks wrote off INR-141-bln farm loans in Apr-Sept, says Sitharaman

MUMBAI – Scheduled commercial banks have written off farm loans worth INR 141.22 billion in Apr-Sept, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in Lok Sabha Monday. Scheduled commercial banks, excluding regional rural banks and payment banks, wrote off loans to agriculture and allied activities totalling INR 218.82 billion in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), the minister said.
The government, in coordination with various stakeholders, namely the State Level Bankers' Committee, the Reserve Bank of India, the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, banks, state and central government departments, has made efforts to extend adequate relief measures to the affected borrowers within the best possible timelines, she said.
