NEW DELHI – India and Mexico have agreed to pursue a preferential trade agreement to mitigate the adverse impact of the latter's 50% tariff on Indian goods, the commerce ministry said Monday. "Through continuous engagement thereafter, a virtual meeting between Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal and the Vice Minister Dr. Luis Rosendo was held on 2 December 2025, agreeing to pursue a trade agreement to mitigate the impact promptly, with technical discussions initiated from 12 December 2025," the ministry said in a release.

Mexico Thursday imposed tariffs of up to 50% on imports from non-preferential trade partners, including India, a move that could hit New Delhi's annual $5.75-billion shipments to the Central American country. The duties are set to kick in from Jan. 1 and will apply to electronics, apparel, chemicals, and many engineering goods, which include automobiles, and metals.

According to Agrawal, Mexico's tariff will affect Indian exports worth $2 billion. The government has been assessing the impact of the tariff on India and engaging with stakeholders to safeguard the interests of Indian exporters, the ministry said. "...pursuing constructive dialogue with Mexico to ensure a stable trade environment benefiting businesses and consumers in both countries", it added in the release.

Mexico is the second country this year to have opted for the tariff route to push trade agreements with partner countries. India is currently also facing heat from the US, the country's top export destination, which has imposed 50% tariff on outbound shipments. India and the US are currently engaged in discussions for a bilateral trade agreement to lower the tariff.  End
