NEW DELHI – Severe cold wave conditions are likely in isolated places in north interior Karnataka on Sunday, while cold wave conditions are expected over parts of Telangana, interior Karnataka, Chhattisgarh and Odisha over the weekend, the India Meteorological Department said Saturday.
Cold wave conditions have been persisting for the past seven days in parts of Chhattisgarh and Odisha, with minimum temperatures remaining significantly below normal across large parts of central and southern India, the weather bureau said.
Dense to very dense fog conditions are likely during the morning hours in isolated pockets of east Uttar Pradesh from Sunday to Tuesday, with very dense fog expected on Sunday and Monday. Similar fog conditions are forecast over west Uttar Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya between Sunday to Tuesday, and over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura through Wednesday, according to the weather bureau.
The department has also warned of dense fog over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi on Monday and Tuesday, and over Himachal Pradesh on Sunday, which could disrupt road, rail, and air transport.
Under the influence of an active western disturbance over north Pakistan and a fresh system developing in the middle tropospheric levels, light rainfall or snowfall is likely at isolated places over Jammu and Kashmir, as well as Ladakh from Friday to Wednesday. Similar conditions are expected over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during the weekend and over Arunachal Pradesh from Friday through Wednesday, the department said.
Minimum temperatures across northwest India are likely to rise gradually by about 2 degrees Celsius over the next two days, with no significant change thereafter. Maharashtra is expected to see a gradual rise of 2–3 degrees Celsius in minimum temperatures over the next five days, while Gujarat is likely to see stable temperatures for four days before a marginal rise, the department said.
No significant change in minimum temperatures is forecast over central, eastern and northeastern India over the next seven days, the department said.
It has advised people to limit outdoor exposure during cold wave conditions, take precautions against frostbite and hypothermia, and remain alert to disruptions caused by dense fog, particularly during early morning hours. End
