NEW DELHI – The Asian Development Bank has approved a $240-million loan for expansion of the metro rail network in Chennai. It has also approved a $108-million results-based loan to support the Mizoram government in achieving universal health coverage, the development bank said on Saturday.

The $240-million is the second tranche of ADB's $780-million financing facility for the Chennai metro project, approved in 2022, and follows the initial $350-million loan under the first tranche. "This project will deliver safer, faster, and more reliable daily travel in Chennai while advancing the city's low-carbon development goals," said ADB Country Director for India Mio Oka. Construction under this tranche is expected to be completed by mid-2028.

ADB is also supporting strengthening of the public health care system in Mizoram to achieve universal health care. The $108-million loan aims to improve equitable access to affordable, high-quality health services for the state's 1.38 million residents, particularly women, older people, and persons with disabilities, the ADB said in a release.

"With ADB support, Mizoram becomes the first state in India to undertake this type of reform in its universal health care system," the release said. "The scheme offers coverage of up to INR 500,000 per family annually, with costs for poor and vulnerable households fully borne by the state government. Other households will contribute a premium, while government employees will pay a fixed share of their salary."  End
