--Cabinet approves INR 117.18 bln for Census 2027
NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet Friday approved INR 117.18 billion for conducting a population census in 2027. The government will conduct the census in two phases: house-listing and housing census in Apr-Sept followed by population enumeration in February 2027. The reference date for the census exercise is Mar. 1, 2027.
For snow-bound non-synchronous areas of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the government will conduct population enumeration in September with Oct. 1, 2026 as the reference date. The government will also capture caste data under the second phase of the census exercise.
The government has developed a dedicated portal, Census Management & Monitoring System, to manage and monitor the entire census process on a real-time basis. It has also developed House-listing Block Creator web map application for the exercise.
"Census 2027 will have a focused and wider publicity campaign for nationwide awareness, inclusive participation, last-mile engagement and support for field operations," the government said in a press release. "It will emphasise sharing accurate, authentic & timely information ensuring cohesive & effective outreach effort."
The government will appoint 3 million field functionaries for the census. It will also engage 18,600 technical manpower for about 550 days at the local level. The government had last conducted a population census in 2011 in two phases, with Mar. 1, 2011 as the reference date. Census 2011 had recorded a population of over 1.21 billion in India. End
