MUMBAI – If the US is "very happy" with the trade deal negotiations, they should sign on the "dotted line", Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said at a press conference. He said this in context to US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer's comment that India has offered the best-ever deal.

On his meeting with the new US Deputy Trade Representative Rick Switzer, Goyal clarified that no negotiations were held. "It's his (Switzer's) first visit to India...we are getting to know each other," he said.

The minister said negotiations related to India-US trade deal are progressing well but refrained from giving a timeline as to when the deal is likely to be finalised. "I don't think we should ever negotiate with deadlines or hard stops because we tend to make mistakes."

On Chief Economic Adviser V. Anantha Nageswaran's comment that India and the US are likely to secure a trade deal by March, Goyal said: "I'm not aware of the basis of the CEA's comments. We'll have to probably refer back to the CEA."

Giving an update on discussions about a free trade agreement between India and the European Union, Goyal said they have made substantial progress and trade officials of both the regions will meet again in early January. "In the first or second week of January, our teams will be meeting again...and around 8th, 9th January, I shall be engaging with Maros Sefcovic (European Commissioner for Trade) again to take the dialogue forward."  End
