MUMBAI – Italian luxury fashion house Prada and two Indian government organisations signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday to manufacture and export a limited edition of kolhapuri chappals in collaborating with Indian artisans. The sandals are traditional leather footwear native to Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Prada, LIDCOM (Sant Rohidas Leather Industries and Charmakar Development Corp. Ltd.) and LIDKAR (Dr. Babu Jagjivan Ram Leather Industries Development Corp. Ltd.) signed the MoU for the framework, implementation, and guidance of the "PRADA Made in India x Inspired by Kolhapuri Chappals" project.
The deal was announced by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Antonio Tajani at the Italy–India Business Forum in Mumbai. Announcing the deal, Goyal said the collaboration would aid traditional artisans in India, and that he hoped to see Indian exports of the kolhapuri chappals hitting $1 billion soon. End
