NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday reviewed the progress in India-US relations with President Donald Trump. Modi said India and the US will continue to work together for global peace, stability, and prosperity. The conversation was held just days after Russia's President Vladimir Putin visited India.

 

"Had a very warm and engaging conversation with President Trump," Modi said in a post on social media platform X. "We reviewed the progress in our bilateral relations and discussed regional and international developments."

 

India and the US are currently negotiating a bilateral trade agreement. The first tranche was expected to be signed by fall. However, Thursday, V. Anantha Nageswaran, chief economic adviser to the government, told Bloomberg Television that the deal is likely to be secured by March, with most trade-related issues having been ironed out.

 

Relations between the two countries deteriorated earlier in the year after the US imposed 50% tariff on goods imports from India, including a penalty of 25?cause India imports crude oil from Russia. The US accounts for nearly 20% of India's total exports. In the financial year 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), India exported goods worth $86.51 billion to the US and had a trade surplus of $40.82 billion. Till October in FY26, India had a trade surplus of $22.06 billion with the US.  End
