NEW DELHI – The government has detected fake input tax credit claims to the tune of INR 416.64 billion under goods and services tax in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) till October, the finance ministry said Tuesday. In the first seven months of the fiscal, 24,109 cases were detected, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said in a written response to the Rajya Sabha.
In FY25, the total amount of fake input tax credit claims under GST was INR 587.72 billion with 15,283 cases, Chaudhary said. The government has been making efforts to weed out fake input tax credit claims.
Biometric-based Aadhaar authentication of registration applicants appearing to be risky, restriction on generation of e-way bills by non-compliant taxpayers and lowering the limit for issuing e-invoices for business-to-business transactions to INR 50 million from INR 100 million are a few steps the government is taking to weed out fake input tax credit claims, the minister said.
According to Chaudhary, GST evasion carried out by pharmaceutical firms in FY26 till October was to the tune of INR 72.5 million, involving just two cases. End
