NEW DELHI – Banks' loan growth moderated slightly to 11.3% on year as on Oct. 31 from a nine-month-high pace in the previous fortnight, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India Friday. On the other hand, deposit growth picked up pace to 9.7% on year at October-end.
Banks' loans were INR 193.91 trillion at the end of October. As of Oct. 17, bank loans had grown 11.5% on year, the quickest pace since the fortnight ended Jan. 10, driven by the festival season and consumption boost from lower goods and services tax rates. Though the pace of loan growth slowed, bank credit was up INR 1.78 trillion from a fortnight ago.
Deposits were at INR 241.74 trillion as of Oct. 31, growing 9.7% on year, from the 9.5% rise seen in the fortnight ended Oct. 17. Deposits also surged INR 2.91 trillion from the previous fortnight. Investments by banks grew 5.1% on year as of Oct. 31, compared with growth of 6.1?ortnight ago. Investments by banks stood at INR 68.90 trillion, up from INR 68.85 trillion a fortnight ago.
