NEW DELHI – Trends available till 1310 IST suggested Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar-led National Democratic Alliance was set for a landslide victory in Bihar Assembly elections. Latest data from the Election Commission of India showed the NDA candidates were ahead on 199 of the 243 seats in the Bihar Legislative Assembly, while the opposition alliance crawled with leads in just 38 seats.
Within the NDA, the BJP was leading in 89 seats, closely followed by the alliance partner Janata Dal (United), which was ahead in 79 seats. The Chirag Paswan-led Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) was ahead on 21 seats and Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi-led Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) on four.
On other hand, the Rashtriya Janata Dal-led Mahagathbandhan appeared to have failed to make an impression on voters. The RJD candidates were ahead in 30 seats and the Congress candidates were leading in five.
Speaking to the television channels, Rashtriya Janata Dal and Congress spokesperson expressed displeasure about Election Commission and raised concerns over the Nitish Kumar government announcing populist schemes just a few days before the announcement of polling dates for the state election. They said the poll panel failed to provide a level-playing field.
BJP spokespersons maintained that the Bihar election was fought under the leadership of Nitish Kumar and there was never a doubt that he will not be the chief minister in the face of the NDA's victory. End
