Govt OKs terms for 8th Pay Commission, names Justice Ranjana Desai as head

NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet Tuesday approved the terms of reference for the eighth Central Pay Commission. The government also appointed former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Desai as the chairperson of the panel.
The commission will make its recommendations within 18 months of the date of its constitution, the governmenr said in a press release. "It may consider, if necessary, sending interim reports on any of the matters as and when the recommendations are finalised."
The commission will make recommendations about changes to the salaries and compensation for central government employees based on the prevailing emolument structure, benefits and working conditions available to employees of public sector companies and private sector, and economic conditions of the country to ensure fiscal prudence, the release said. The commission is also expected to consider the impact of the recommendations on the finances of the state governments, which usually adopt the recommendations with some modifications.
"Usually, the recommendations of the pay commissions are implemented after a gap of every ten years," the release said. Going by this trend, the effect of the 8th Central Pay Commission recommendations would normally be expected from Jan. 1, 2026, the release added. The government had implemnted the recommendations of the seventh Pay Commission in 2016. End
