NEW DELHI - The industry has passed on the benefits of goods and services tax rate cuts, introduced on Sept. 22, to the end consumers, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said Saturday. "We are convinced that the rate reduction is actually reaching the common people," Sitharaman said at a press conference.
The government has been monitoring the prices of 54 items to check if companies are passing on the lower GST rates to consumers, the finance minister said. "We have been closely monitoring 54 such items, where we wanted to be sure that the prices are reduced...there is a remarkable impact of this set of new GST rate reductions that have happened and every item that I have monitored which is of relevance for day-to-day life of common citizens...54, and we still continue to monitor them, the benefit has been passed on to the consumers," she said.
Sitharaman also said that in some cases the price cut on items has been higher than expectation. The Department of Consumer Affairs has received 3,169 complaints related to entities not passing GST rate cuts. Out of this, 3,075 complaints have been forwarded to the nodal officers in the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, Sitharaman said. Moreover, 94 complaints have been resolved by the consumer affairs department.
On Sept. 3, the GST Council overhauled the indirect tax regime as part of next-generation reforms by collapsing the four-slab GST structure of 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28% to a two-slab structure of 5% and 18%. The decision was implemented from Sept. 22. The Council also introduced a new GST rate of 40% on sin and luxury goods. End
