India Sept unemployment rate rises to 5.2% from 5.1% in Aug, says statistics ministry

NEW DELHI – India's unemployment rate for people aged 15 years and above rose to 5.2% in September from 5.1% in August with joblessness rising in both rural and urban areas, according to the monthly Periodic Labour Force Survey from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation released Wednesday.

 

The unemployment rate in urban areas rose to 6.8% last month from 6.7% in August. For rural areas, it increased to 4.6% in September from 4.3% in August.

 

The statistics ministry now releases unemployment data on a monthly basis for both rural and urban areas. Previously, the ministry only released quarterly urban unemployment data, and annual data for both urban and rural areas.

 

The labour force participation rate -– the percentage of persons working or seeking or available for work

-- rose to a five-month high of 55.3% in September from 55.0% in August for persons aged 15 years and above. The worker population ratio, which is the percentage of employed persons in the population, increased to a five-month high of 52.4% in September from 52.2% a month ago.

 

The labour force participation rate was higher in rural areas at 57.4% compared with 50.9% in urban areas. The participation rate was sharply higher for men than for women. The all-India labour force participation rate in September was 77.1% for men and 34.1% for women in the age group of 15 years and above.

 

Youth unemployment, for persons aged 15-29 years, increased to a three-month high of 15.0% in September from 14.6% in August. Unemployment was highest among young women in the urban areas at 26.4%, the highest in the current series which has data from April.  End
