NEW DELHI – The government has included large ships in the Harmonised Master List of Infrastructure sub-sectors, the finance ministry said in a notification Friday. This will become effective from Oct. 11.

Large ships are defined as commercial vessels with a gross tonnage of 10,000 or more, which are under Indian ownership and flag. Commercial vessels with a gross tonnage of 1,500 or more and built in India with Indian ownership and flag are also termed large ships.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had first announced the plan to include large ships in the infrastructure harmonised list during her Budget speech in February.

Inclusion in the harmonised list of infrastructure sub-sectors would qualify large ships for priority lending, tax benefits, and government support similar to other infrastructure assets such as roads, ports, and railways. They would also get potential benefits under India's Maritime India Vision 2030 and National Infrastructure pipeline. Shipping companies may also get tax exemptions or lower import duties on large ships, besides preferential rates from banks and financial institutions.  End
