NEW DELHI – India and the European Union will begin the next round of negotiations for a free trade agreement on Monday in New Delhi, a commerce ministry official said. The two sides had held the last round of discussions in July.

India and the EU are very close to finalising some chapters of the trade agreement, the official said. During the last round of negotiations in July, the trading partners exchanged offers on market access in the services and non-services sector, the official said.

The upcoming round of negotiations is more significant for both regions than previous rounds amid the volatile trade and tariff environment created by the US. After India's top export destination imposed 50% tariff on Indian goods, the EU, which was the second-largest buyer for Indian exporters, has become utmost important. India is looking to expedite the conclusion of negotiations with the EU by signing the trade agreement in tranches.

Brussels is also keen on concluding the deal with India soon as goods from the EU are subject to a 15% reciprocal tariff by the US. India and the EU have set an aim to conclude the negotiations by the end of 2025. The two sides resumed discussions in 2023 after a gap of nine years. The trade talks, initially started in 2007, were suspended due to differences over market access.

The EU has a share of around 15% in India's total outbound shipments. India exported goods worth $75.76 billion to the EU in 2024–25 (Apr-Mar), and had a trade surplus of $15.10 billion.  End
