RBI's net short fwd dollar position $57.85 bln Jul-end, dn $2.5 bln from Jun

MUMBAI – The Reserve Bank of India's net outstanding short positions in dollar/rupee forward contracts fell to $57.85 billion at the end of July from $60.39 billion at the end of June, data from the Reserve Bank of India Friday showed. This is the fifth straight month where the central bank's short forward positions have declined, from a peak of nearly $99 billion at the end of February.
The central bank's short positions with maturity of 1-3 months came down to $10.84 billion at the end of July from $11.85 billion a month ago. However, for the tenure of up to one month, the outstanding short positions rose to $7.70 billion at Jul-end, up $5.25 billion from a month ago. The net position of the RBI's forward book is the difference between its outstanding gross purchases and gross sales of forward contracts.
The central bank's short positions in forwards with maturity ranging from three months to a year fell to $19.22 billion as on Jul. 31 from $25.91 billion a month earlier. Its short positions in long-term forwards, with maturity over one year, remained unchanged from a month ago at $20.10 billion as of Jul-end. The central bank did not have any gross long positions in its forwards book at the end of July. The rupee fell over 2% against the dollar in July to 87.5950.
