NEW DELHI – The Reserve Bank of India's net outstanding short positions in dollar/rupee forward contracts fell to $60.39 billion at the end of June from $65.22 billion at the end of May, data from the Reserve Bank of India Thursday showed. This is the fourth straight month where the short forward positions have declined, from a peak of nearly $99 billion at the end of February.
The central bank's short positions up to one-month maturity came down to $2.54 billion at the end of June from $4.83 billion a month ago. However, for the tenure of 1-3 months, the outstanding short positions rose to $11.85 billion at June-end, up $1.61 billion from a month ago. The net position of the RBI's forward book is the difference between its outstanding gross purchases and gross sales of forward contracts.
The central bank's short positions in forwards with maturity ranging from three months to a year fell to $25.91 billion as on Jun. 30 from $30.06 billion a month before. Its short position in long-term forwards, with maturity over one year, remained unchanged from a month ago at $20.10 billion as of June-end. The central bank did not have any gross long positions in its forwards book at the end of June. The rupee fell 0.2% against the dollar in June to 85.7550.
