MUMBAI – The Reserve Bank of India's net outstanding short positions in dollar/rupee forward contracts fell to $65.22 billion at the end of May from $72.58 billion at the end of April, data from the Reserve Bank of India Monday showed.
The central bank's short positions up to one-month maturity came down to $4.83 billion at the end of May from $7.36 billion a month ago. However, for the tenure of 1-3 months, the RBI rolled over its existing short positions of $7.37 billion and added $2.87 billion to it, taking the total short positions for a tenure of 1-3 months to $10.24 billion at the end of May. The net position of the RBI's forward book is the difference between its outstanding gross purchases and gross sales of forward contracts.
The central bank's positions in forwards with maturity ranging from three months to a year fell to $30.1 billion at the end of May from $37.8 billion at the end of April. Its position in long-term forwards, with maturity over one year, remained unchanged on a monthly basis at $20.1 billion as of May 31. The central bank did not have any gross long positions in its forwards book at the end of May. In May, the rupee fell 1.3% against the dollar to 85.5775.
