RBI says INR 1 bln of withdrawn INR 2,000 notes returned in April

MUMBAI – The Reserve Bank of India got back INR 1 billion of the withdrawn INR 2,000 currency notes in April, the central bank said Friday. As such, the total value of INR 2,000 banknotes in circulation has now declined to INR 62.66 billion as of Wednesday, with 98.24% of the notes out of circulation, the RBI said.
In March, the central bank got back INR 1.05 billion of the INR 2,000 notes, which were withdrawn in May 2023. The value of INR 2,000 notes in circulation was INR 3.56 trillion when the RBI announced their withdrawal.
Currently, the facility to deposit or exchange the withdrawn note is only open at the RBI's 19 issue offices. The INR 2,000 currency note continues to be a legal tender, the RBI said. End
