India adds 1.54 mln new workers under Employees' State Insurance in Feb

NEW DELHI – India added 1.54 million new workers under the Employees' State Insurance Scheme in February, down 14.8% on month, the labour ministry said Friday. The new registrations under the scheme in February were only 1.9% higher than a year ago.
Around 47.7%, or 736,000, of the new workers enrolled in February were aged 25 years or below. A total of 23,526 new establishments were registered in February, down 15.4% on month. Around 335,000 female employees and 74 transgenders were registered under the scheme during the month, the ministry said.
The Employees' State Insurance Scheme is a social security scheme that provides medical treatment to registered employees and their families. The scheme applies to establishments that employ 10 or more individuals. Employees earning up to INR 21,000 per month contribute 0.75% of their wages to the scheme, while others contribute 3.25%. End
