NEW DELHI – The Reserve Bank of India Thursday said 10-year sovereign green bonds that will be issued in the second half of 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) will be eligible for investment by non-residents under the fully accessible route.

The central bank has previously included all sovereign green bonds issued in FY23 and FY24 under the fully accessible route. The RBI introduced the fully accessible route, which allows foreign investments in bonds without any investment limits, in March 2020.

Interestingly, the RBI has not included 30-year green bonds, which will be issued in Oct-Mar, under the fully accessible route. As per the government's market borrowing calendar for Oct-Mar, the government plans to raise INR 200 billion through the issuance of 10-year and 30-year green bonds. In July, the RBI excluded the new issuances of 14-year and 30-year government bonds from the fully accessible route.

The central bank has also not included the 10-year sovereign green bond issued in August. This was the first time that the government issued a green bond in the first half of a financial year.  End
