--IMD: India Aug 23 rainfall 7.7 mm, 1% above normal 

--IMD: India Jun 1-Aug 23 rainfall 664.7 mm, 3% above normal 

MUMBAI – Rainfall across the country today was 7.7 mm, 1% above the normal of 7.6 mm for the day, the IMD said. Since Jun 1, India has received 664.7 mm rainfall, 3% above the normal of 643.0 mm for the period, it said.

Two out of four homogeneous regions in the country received below normal showers. Rainfall was 22% below normal at 4.7 mm in northwest India, and 45% below normal in the southern peninsula at 3.1 mm. Rainfall was 13% above normal in the east and northeast region at 12.4 mm and 22% above normal at 10.8 mm in central India.

The weather bureau said that a low pressure area lies over northern parts of West Bengal and adjoining northeast Jharkhand, and is likely to move westwards during the next 24 hours. Under the influence of this low pressure, heavy rainfall is expected over most northeastern states over the next few days. Very heavy rainfall is also likely over Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and the plains of West Bengal during the weekend, it said. 

So far in the season, rainfall has been normal in 21 of the 36 sub-divisions in the country. Rainfall was "excess" in eight, and "deficient" in five sub-divisions, it said. Rainfall was "large excess" in two sub-divisions since Jun 1.  End
