NEW DELHI - The Aam Aadmi Party is likely to elect a new leader to head its government in Delhi at 1130 IST on Tuesday at a meeting of its legislative wing at the official residence of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, a party source said today.

“A legislature party meeting of AAP is scheduled to take place at 1130 am tomorrow morning at the chief minister’s residence," the source said. "It will be decided at that meeting who the next chief minister of Delhi will be.”

Meanwhile, Kejriwal has sought an appointment with Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena on Tuesday, the source said. According to the source, Saxena has agreed to meet the AAP national convener at 1630 IST. It is expected that Kejriwal will tender his resignation from the chief minister's post to the lieutenant governor at this meeting.

In a surprise announcement on Sunday, just days after stepping out on bail from Tihar jail after nearly six months in judicial custody in connection with the Delhi excise policy case, Kejriwal said he would resign as chief minister by Tuesday and someone else would take his place until the state assembly polls are held.

A meeting of the party’s political affairs committee was under way at the time of filing this report. The committee is likely to shortlist some names, of which one will be chosen by the legislative wing on Tuesday. The front-runners to succeed Kejriwal as chief minister, according to the source, are ministers Atishi, Gopal Rai, and Kailash Gahlot. End
