Heavy rains likely in east India next wk due to low pressure, says IMD

NEW DELHI – Heavy rainfall is likely over several parts of eastern and central India next week under the influence of a low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal, the India Meteorological Department said today.

The low pressure over northwest Bay of Bengal is likely to move northwestwards during the next two days and intensify further over the plains of West Bengal, according to the weather agency. Thereafter, it is likely to move across the plains of West Bengal, Jharkhand and adjoining areas during the subsequent three days.

The plains of West Bengal are likely to receive heavy rainfall over the next four days, and over Bihar during Sun-Tue, the weather bureau said. Most eastern states are also expected to get very heavy rainfall in certain pockets during the next six-seven days. Additionally, extremely heavy showers are expected over Odisha today.

Since Jun 1, the east and northeastern parts of the country have received 12?low normal rainfall at 808.8 mm, data from the weather bureau showed.

In central India, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh are expected to get heavy rainfall during the next few days. Very heavy rainfall is also expected in some pockets of Chhattisgarh today and Saturday.

In the northwest, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi are expected to receive heavy rainfall in certain places during Tuesday, the weather bureau said. Extremely heavy rainfall is also likely over west Rajasthan today, it said.

Heavy rainfall is also likely to continue over Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka during the next two to three days, the weather agency said. So far in the southwest monsoon season, the southern peninsula has received 21?ove normal rainfall at 562.8 mm, the data showed. End
