Apr-May major subsidies at 546.88 bln rupees, down 1.1% YoY

NEW DELHI – The government's expenditure on major subsidies in Apr-May declined 1.1% on year to 546.877 bln rupees due to lower spending towards fertiliser subsidy, data from the Controller General of Accounts showed. The expenditure accounted for 14% of the Interim Budget target of 3.812 trln rupees for 2024-25 (Apr-Mar).

The fertiliser subsidy bill fell 34.6% to 160.261 bln rupees in the first two months of the current fiscal year. On the other hand, the food subsidy bill rose 25.1% to 385.391 bln rupees in the same period.

This year's Budget estimate for expenditure on major subsidies is down 7.8% from 2023-24's revised estimate of 4.135 trln rupees.
