AHMEDABAD – Adani Group is learnt to be working on setting up its first multispecialty hospital in Ahmedabad, sources in the know said. "A land parcel has been identified and plans are being finalised to set up a 600-bed multispecialty hospital over about 2 mln sq ft area," a company official said on condition of anonymity. "The intent is to begin construction work on the hospital by April 2025."

In May 2022, Adani Enterprises, the flagship company of Adani Group, announced the incorporation of Adani Health Ventures to foray into the healthcare space, including the setting up of hospitals, diagnostic facilities and research centres. A senior state government official said, in the past, Adani Group had even proposed setting up a 'Medicity' in Ahmedabad to include all of these in one place.

Adani Group has been present in the healthcare segment through its corporate social responsibility arm--Adani Foundation--for a long time. The foundation has been running a hospital in Bhuj city in Kutch district of Gujarat for nearly two decades, and also runs several mobile clinics in the country.

The company official said that, to begin with, the group plans to set up multispecialty hospitals in the cities of Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Delhi. Another official working with Adani Group said it has evaluated land parcels between Ahmedabad airport and Gandhinagar for the same purpose. This official said the group is mulling setting up hospitals in land parcels available near the airports it operates across the country.

Adani Enterprises, through its subsidiary Adani Airport Holdings Ltd, manages seven airports in the country, including Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Thiruvananthapuram, Jaipur, Mangaluru and Guwahati. It is also working on the redevelopment of these airports.

Further, the first company official said, "Adanis also plan to set up hotels in Ahmedabad, Lucknow and Thiruvananthapuram. The first one is likely to be a 7-bln-rupee five-star property near Ahmedabad airport... In the future, a second premium hotel, too, could be built here."

Adani Group is also working on a Delhi-style Aerocity project at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad at a cost of 10 bln rupees. Other than two hotels, it could host a convention centre, a business centre, meeting rooms, retail spaces, entertainment and healthcare facilities.

The first company official said that Adani Group could spend nearly 50 bln rupees by 2028 on setting up a hospital, two hotels and an Aerocity at Ahmedabad airport.

An email to the Adani Group spokesperson for a response on these developments remained unanswered.

At 1200 IST, shares of Adani Enterprises traded 2.1% lower at 2,894.75 rupees on the National Stock Exchange.
