HYDERABAD/NEW DELHI - Cipla Ltd., which is aiming to end 2026-27 (Apr-Mar) with $1 billion sales in North America, said it has multiple pathways to achieve the goal. The launch of two more respiratory products and one peptide asset in the US by March are key moves the company is pinning hopes on, while simultaneously working on several other areas to improve sales, management said in a post-earnings analyst conference call Tuesday.
Cipla reported consolidated net profit of INR 8.78 billion for Jul-Sept, down 35% on year. Revenues fell 2.4% to INR 74.04 billion. Analysts had expected the company to post INR 9.7 billion in net profit and INR 76.6 billion in revenues for the reporting quarter.
The company reported $172 million of sales in North America in Jul-Sept against $233 million a year ago, a fall of around 26% on year. Sequentially, sales were up 6% in the region. Supply issues with generic lanreotide, a drug used to treat hormone-related issues, and the absence of Revlimid are the key reasons for weak performance in the region. In rupee terms, North America sales were down 19% on year at INR 16.43 billion.
Cipla is planning to launch its generic asthma drug Advair in the December quarter, which is expected to contribute to growth in coming quarters, Managing Director Achin Gupta said. The company is also expecting the ramping up of the respiratory drug Vintolin to add to the overall growth in the US in coming quarters. Though the company received approval for generic Advair in July, the company didn't launch it in the US due to regulatory issues at its key Pithampur facility. The drug has a $900 million market in the US.
Cipla management said it will file 40-50 new product applications per year with the regulators targeting North American markets in the next three years. It is scouting for inorganic growth opportunities in North America and Europe, focusing on complex generic and differentiated products, besides suitable companies to add growth.
In Africa, the company got a favourable court order in a tender-related case, which is likely to help boost sales in coming quarters, Gupta said. For the September quarter, sales in Africa declined 1% on year to INR 11.71 billion.
The company expects spending on research and development for FY27 to be 6-7% of total sales.
Tuesday, Cipla shares ended at INR 1,350 apiece on the National Stock Exchange, down 0.4% from its previous close. End
US$1 = INR 95.11
