MUMBAI – Kajaria Ceramics Ltd. reported slightly better-than-expected results for the September quarter. Its earnings indicated strong demand for tiles and the company even managed to limit the rise in expenses, aiding its net profit.

The consolidated net profit of Kajaria Ceramics for the quarter was INR 1.90 billion. Analysts had expected the company to report a net profit of INR 1.81 billion. The reported net profit was nearly 43% higher on year.

The company's consolidated revenue increased nearly 24% on year to INR 14.68 billion, led by a year-on-year rise of 22% in revenue from its largest business, tiles. At the same time, the smaller business of adhesives, bathware, and sanitaryware reported strong growth of 36% in revenue, aiding the overall revenue growth. The consolidated revenue for the September quarter was also slightly better than analysts' expectations of INR 14.32 billion.

The 24% rise in revenue for the September quarter came from a mix of volume growth and price hikes. The company's consolidated sales volume rose 10% on year to 31.81 million square metres, which suggested that the remaining growth came from higher prices of products.

The revenue growth of Kajaria Ceramics was higher than the overall rise in expenses, which rose nearly 21% on year. This helped the company report a sharp jump in profitability with the earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation margin rising to 19.51% from 17.94% a year ago. Its consolidated EBITDA for the September quarter was INR 2.87 billion, slightly better than expectations of INR 2.77 billion.

However, high freight rates and limited container availability continue to pose challenges for the company, Chairman Ashok Kajaria said in an investor update after the earnings announcement. The pressure related to costs was visible in the company's sequential performance as the consolidated EBITDA margin was down 9 basis points from the June quarter.

For the six months ended September, the company's consolidated net profit rose over 48% on year to INR 3.59 billion and revenue rose 22% to INR 27.96 billion. Friday, shares of the company ended at INR 1,136.60 on the National Stock Exchange, down nearly 2% from Thursday.

Apart from the earnings, the company's board approved increasing capital expenditure planned for the Srikalahasti plant in Andhra Pradesh and the Gailpur plant in Rajasthan. It also approved setting up a new facility for tiles adhesive in Durgapur, West Bengal.

The company now plans to spend INR 3.40 billion on capacity expansion at its Andhra Pradesh plant, nearly 62% higher than what was proposed in April. As per the new plan, the plant's annual capacity will increase by 12.5 million square metres of glazed vitrified tiles from the current capacity of 8.80 million square metres. This capital expenditure will be completed by June, three months later than what was earlier proposed.

The company also raised the capital expenditure planned for the Gailpur tiles plant to INR 1.80 billion from INR 1.65 billion proposed in July. This project will be completed in April with capacity expected to increase by 11 million square metres. The plant's current capacity is nearly 36 million square metres per annum.

Kajaria Ceramics will spend another INR 340 million on the new tiles adhesive facility in Durgapur, which will have a capacity of 9,000 tonnes per month. The company already has a plant with the same capacity in Gailpur, which is running at 71% utilisation.  End
