--SBI: Personally identifiable records of 3,897 customers leaked on dark web
MUMBAI – State Bank of India Wednesday reported a suspected leak of customer data on the dark web, with a preliminary analysis identifying 3,897 records containing personally identifiable information among approximately 375,000 records available online.
The bank said it received communications on Oct. 16 from its Threat Intelligence Service Provider, the Defence Cyber Agency, and CERT-In about a suspected customer data exposure. The exposed information reportedly included customers' registered mobile numbers, dates of birth, names, gender, email addresses, residential addresses, branch and customer information file identifiers, lead IDs, and metadata associated with loan and lead records and other related files.
SBI said it needed a detailed investigation to establish the authenticity and completeness of the exposed data, determine the potential source and extent of the exposure, and assess the associated risks to customers and the bank.
The bank has activated its cyber incident response and containment protocols and engaged an independent CERT-In-empanelled cybersecurity agency to assess and investigate the nature and extent of the alleged compromise, the state-owned bank said in an exchange filing.
The incident had no material impact on the bank's core business operations, financial performance or business continuity, SBI said, adding that its core business functions continued to operate normally without disruption. The bank said it is conducting a detailed assessment and implementing appropriate preventive measures as required.
At 0949 IST, SBI shares were being traded at INR 979.90 on the National Stock Exchange, up 0.6% from the previous close. The country's largest lender reported a net profit of INR 211.21 billion for the June quarter on net interest income of INR 469.92 billion. End
