Equity Alert: Asian markets mixed; Nikkei up 2%, Australia's S&P/ASX dn 1.5%
MUMBAI--0845 IST--Asian markets were mixed as global bond yields remain under pressure and crude oil prices fell. Investors have accessed the slower-than-expected rise in US inflation in August that reduces the probability of a rate hike by the Federal Reserve later in the month.
Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 was the top performer in the region, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 was the underperformer. Markets in mainland China will be closed till Oct. 8 on account of the National Day Golden Week holiday, while Hong Kong's markets will re-open Friday.
The December futures contract for Brent crude oil prices fell below $100 per barrel after six trading sessions. Government bonds in Japan, Australia, and New Zealand slipped, while the US benchmark 10-year treasury yield edged up one basis point to 5.30%, according to a Bloomberg report. "The macro backdrop is also becoming more mixed," Reuters quoted Charu Chanana, chief investment strategist at Saxo, as saying. "Softer US data has taken some pressure off Fed expectations and shorter-term yields, but long-term yields remain high, so the cost-of-capital concern has not really gone away."
In the Nikkei 225, chipmaker Advantest Corp. rose the most, up nearly 8%, driven by strong results from client Micron Technology for the Jun-Aug quarter. Micron's guidance for the November quarter also exceeded market consensus. Tokyo Electron and Kioxia Holdings also rose around 5% each during early trade. The heavyweight SoftBank Corp. rose over 3%. Murata Manufacturing Co. rose nearly 8%.
Meanwhile, Australia's benchmark index fell 1.5% due to losses in most of its constituents. Shares of index heavyweight BHP Group were moderately down and Commonwealth Bank of Australia fell over 1%.

Equity Alert: Mkt to see some gains as crude oil falls below $100/bbl
MUMBAI--0839 IST--Benchmark indices are expected to see some gains as crude oil prices fell below the psychological mark of $100 per barrel. The fall in crude oil prices is an essential factor for equity markets to see some gains as the indices find themselves in an oversold territory, according to analysts. Information technology shares will be in focus ahead of Accenture August quarter earnings. Most Asian indices opened higher Thursday while Wall Street indices ended on a mixed note.
The November futures of Brent crude were at $97.97 per barrel, down 0.1%. The crude oil prices fell below the psychological mark of $100 per barrel after six sessions. Signs of rising crude oil exports from West Asia led the fall in crude oil prices. The exports from the region have been growing strongly over the week, with some estimates showing the outflows nearing the levels before the US-Iran war, Dow Jones reported, citing ANZ Research. However, this level is not enough for markets to take a breath, as crude prices were over 34% higher than the levels before the US-Iran war. The sentiment for Indian indices may improve Thursday as high crude oil prices pulled down the markets for three consecutive sessions this week.
Information technology shares will be the centre of attraction Thursday ahead of IT bellweather Accenture's August quarter results. Investors will focus on the company's 2027 outlook as the advancement in artificial intelligence technology weighed down on Accenture's stock, Dow Jones reported. The American Depository Receipts of Wipro rose over 2% and Infosys was up 1% overnight. For the September quater, information technology companies are expected to report subdued results. "Discretionary spending remains restrained, with clients adopting a cautious spending approach amid macro uncertainty," Emkay Global Financial Services said in a report.
Kotak Mahindra Bank's stock will be in focus as well after the Reserve Bank of India approved the appointment of Anup Kumar Saha as the managing director and chief executive officer of the bank for a period of three years from Jan. 1.
Wednesday, the Nifty 50 ended 0.4% lower at 22620.45. The 50-stock index reached the price support zone of 22500-22400 levels, said Vipin Kumar, senior technical and derivatives analyst at Globe Capital Market. "The possibility of a bounce-back rally towards 22850 spot levels cannot be ruled out at this juncture," Kumar said. However, the overall market breath is negative as long as the index is trading below 23000-23100 on a closing basis, he added. (Adhithya Aji)
Equity Alert: US indices end mixed amid soft inflation data; oil prices rise
MUMBAI--0730 IST--US indices ended on a mixed note Wednesday despite a softer-than-expected inflation data. Wednesday, the November futures contract for Brent crude oil rose nearly 1% to close above $103 per barrel. The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average was the underperformer among its peers, followed by the S&P 500. On other hand, the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite ended slightly higher. In September, the S&P 500 and Dow Jones fell 0.5% and 4.3%, respectively, while the Nasdaq rose nearly 2%.
The Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index rose 3.4% on year in August, which was below the 3.7% estimate of economists polled by Reuters. "The less-than-feared price data for August may buy the Fed time to await more data and pass on Oct. 28, but still-elevated inflation and a resilient consumer and economy point to another rate hike by year-end," Reuters quoted Sal Guatieri, a senior economist at BMO Capital Markets, as saying. The expectation for a 25-basis-point interest rate hike in the US Federal Reserve's October meeting dropped to 38.2% from 50.9% Tuesday, according to data from the CME FedWatch tool. The final reading for the US GDP for the June quarter rose to 2.2% on year from the previously estimated 1.5%. This was driven by robust consumer spending and business investment related to the build-out of artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The Dow Jones and S&P 500 index continued their losing streak for the third session, while Nasdaq bucked its trend and ended higher. The S&P 500 Information Technology index ended nearly 1% higher. This was driven by gains in Nvidia, which ended moderately higher, while Apple and Microsoft closed nearly 1% higher each. The Dow Jones index fell due to losses in banking stocks. Shares of Goldman Sachs Group fell almost 2% and JPMorgan Chase & Co. ended over 1% lower. Weak performance was also observed in the stocks of select consumer discretionary players such as Nike and McDonald's Corp. which endesd more than 1% lower each.
