Equity Alert: US indices close higher, gains in tech stocks lend support
MUMBAI--0730 IST--US markets closed higher Thursday on the back of a fall in the treasury yields and a decline in crude oil prices. Gains in technology and semiconductor stocks supported the indices. The Nasdaq Composite outperformed its peer indices in the US while the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose a percentage each.
Shares of Nvidia, Microsoft, Qualcomm, and Amazon rose around 2?ch. Intel Corp. surged 7%, Advanced Micro Devices 6%, and Marvell Technology rose 5%. The Philadelphia SE Semiconductor Index closed over 3% higher and the S&P 500 Information Technology index gained 2%. Further, out of the 11 S&P 500 sectoral indices, only the S&P 500 Financials and the S&P 500 Consumer Staples closed in the red and that too with just a small margin.
"We're seeing interest in the areas of the market that have been hit hard in anticipation of this Fed rate hike," Reuters quoted Robert Pavlik, senior portfolio manager at Dakota Wealth in Fairfield, as saying. "...people sort of stepping in, doing a little bit of buying on the pullback," he said.
The benchmark 10-year US treasury yield fell below the 5% mark. The November futures contract of Brent crude oil also fell slightly and hovered near $105 per barrel. Crude oil prices fell after hostilities in West Asia showed signs of abating. "The market's reaction could be kind of summed up in one word: relief," CNBC quoted Robert Conzo, CEO at The Wealth Alliance, as saying.
