NEW DELHI – In a meeting on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin Friday reviewed the progress in bilateral cooperation between the two countries in political, economic, defence, energy, space, skill mobility and people-to-people domains, according to a government release. The two leaders welcomed Russia's 'INNOPROM India' exhibition, held for the first time in India, and underscored its importance in further expanding trade and industrial ties between the two nations, the release said.

 

This was the second meeting between the two leaders this year, after they met in Bishkek on the sidelines of the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit on Aug. 31. They also exchanged views on India-Russia engagement in BRICS under India's chairship for 2026, according to the release.

The two leaders agreed to remain engaged to further strengthen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between the two countries, which continues to register significant growth and has shown resilience amid geopolitical uncertainties, the release said. Putin also invited Modi to visit Russia for the 24th India-Russia Annual Summit, which Modi accepted, with the dates to be decided through diplomatic channels.

At the meeting, Modi and Putin also shared perspectives on the conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region, which have affected maritime trade and the safety of Indian seafarers, the release said. Modi reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy are the way forward in resolving conflicts and that India stands ready to assist in peace efforts.  End
