MUMBAI – India recorded 5.1 millimetres of rain Friday, 13% below the normal of 5.9 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. During Jun. 1–Sept. 11, the country received 655.6 millimetres of rain, 15% below the normal of 772.5 millimetres for the period.

Of the country's four homogeneous regions, east and northeast India, northwest India, and south India registered "deficient" rains Friday, while central India received "excess" rains. 

The east and northeast region received 27% below normal rainfall at 7.4 millimetres and south India recorded 59% below normal rainfall at 2.1 millimetres. Meanwhile, central India received 38% above normal rains at 8.6 millimetres and northwest India recorded 2.1 millimetres of rainfall, 47% below normal.

On Friday, Odisha received the highest rainfall at 30.8 millimetres, followed by sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim at 25.9 millimetres, according to the weather bureau's data. 

Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large deficient" in 17, "deficient" in two, "large excess" in seven, "normal" in three and "excess" in two. There was no rain in five subdivisions, according to the data.  End
