MUMBAI – Headline equity indices ended the week on a negative note after an upmove on Thursday, when it snapped a three-day losing run. Crude oil prices, which surged to a nearly four-month high of $110 a barrel amid the escalating war in West Asia, pulled down the Nifty 50 index to a three-month closing low. The 50-stock index registered a loss of 1% during open, but came off lows in the second half of the session, when the November contract of Brent crude oil started giving up its gains and fell to $104 a barrel. A recovery in index heavyweight HDFC Bank and its peer stocks also helped the 50-stock index to come off lows.
On Thursday, US President Donald Trump said he does not regret the ongoing Iran war despite the impact the conflict may have on the November US mid-term elections, according to a report by Mint. "I don't believe in the word 'regret,'" Trump told Fox News, according to the report. "You can always question yourself a little bit. If I had it to do again, I would do exactly as I did," he added.
At the end of the continuous trading session on exchanges at 1515 IST, the Nifty 50 was at 23435.10 points, down 0.2% from Thursday. The BSE Sensex was at 74914.06 points, flat from the previous close. After the closing auction session, the Nifty 50 ended at 23398.10, down 79.70 points or 0.3%. The Sensex ended at 74781.76, down 120.83 points or 0.2% from Thursday.
Broader market indices were also in tandem with their benchmark peers, barring the Nifty Midcap 50. Small-cap indices ended around 0.6% lower each, while the Nifty Midcap 150 and Nifty Midcap 100 ended marginally lower. Most sectoral indices ended the session lower, with the Nifty Metal index being among the major losers, down nearly 3%. The market's fear gauge, India VIX, rose almost 4% and settled at 12.2425 points, indicating rising nervousness among investors.
Metal companies were key drags on the Nifty 50 index during the session, with Hindalco Industries ending as the worst hit. The stock, which ended over 3% lower, extended its fall for the second session Friday. Its peer companies JSW Steel and Tata Steel ended over 2–3% lower.
Realty companies were the next big losers during the session. The Nifty Realty index declined for the sixth straight session Friday, with most of its constituents trading lower. The sectoral index ended the session at an over two-month closing low. "Elevated crude oil prices are a major threat to inflation- and interest rate-sensitive stocks and sectors like realty," Vipin Kumar, assistant vice-president of research at Globe Capital Market, said.
Godrej Properties and Lodha Developers were among the major losers in both the Nifty 200 and Nifty 500 indices, down 4–7%. Shares of Godrej Properties fell after reports that the company would face an estimated financial impact of around INR 700 million due to settlement of a dispute regarding its Godrej Air project in Gurugram with Orris Infrastructure.
Shares of Cochin Shipyard shed the most in the Nifty 200 as well as Nifty 500 indices, down over 9%. Shares of the shipbuilding company fell after its management indicated lower earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation margin over the next two years. The company is aiming for an EBITDA margin of 14% for the next two financial years, the management said in an analyst conference call Thursday.
Banking and financial services stocks recovered post Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra's comments to CNBC-TV18, which helped the Nifty 50 come off lows. Shares of YES Bank rose more and ended as the biggest gainer in the Nifty 200 index, up over 5%. HDFC Bank recovered from its earlier losses and closed the session as the highest Nifty 50 gainer, up over 2%. The Nifty Private Bank turned out to be the highest gainer among indices tracking sectors, up 0.5%. The Nifty Bank and Nifty Financial Services were marginally higher each.
Information technology stocks also lent support, as the index tracking the sector gained after a seven-session losing run. Barring LTM, HCL Technologies, and Tata Consultancy Services, all constituents of Nifty IT ended with gains. Tech Mahindra and Wipro were the major gaining IT stocks in the Nifty 50, up nearly 1% each.
Pine Labs emerged as the highest gainer in the Nifty 500 index, up nearly 17%. The company's chief business officer and president Kush Mehra told CNBC-TV18 that he expects a promising second and third quarter for the company as the festive season kicks off in August.
