--NITI Aayog CEO: Must build human capability before new tech kills few jobs
MUMBAI – The collective responsibility of the government, regulators, and the industry will be to ensure that new technology, including artificial intelligence, does not eat away mass income, NITI Aayog Chief Executive Officer Anurag Jain said Friday. The benefits of the rapid expansion in technological innovation can be tilted towards early-adopter corporates, which will not necessarily lead to holistic gains, Jain said at the Global Fintech Fest 2026.
According to Jain, artificial intelligence will kill a few jobs and, therefore, it is more important than ever to train and build capabilities before human labour is replaced. He, however, added that AI could also add new jobs, but for that, skilling is necessary. To that extent, he said that the emerging technology ecosystem must ensure new job creation happens as a priority.
This is not the first time that the government has sounded caution over artificial intelligence emerging as a threat to human capital. In the Economic Survey for 2025–26 (Apr-Mar), a team led by Chief Economic Adviser to the government V. Anantha Nageswaran had said that it was necessary for Indians to now also train themselves for jobs beyond the "white-collar" section, to focus on skill-based service areas that are unlikely to be touched by artificial intelligence. The survey had also pitched for more responsible use of artificial intelligence by large enterprises, urging them to exercise judgement before using it to cut costs.
According to Jain, the boom in the emerging technology segment is due to the collective efforts of regulators, the government, and companies, which include humans. The dividends that artificial intelligence can offer, hence, must also be collectively shared. Indians must prepare themselves to leverage this dividend by becoming technologically skilled, having the power to use artificial intelligence to their benefit rather than being challenged by it. End
