US crude oil stocks dn 400,000 bbl in week to Sept. 4, exports dn, says EIA

MUMBAI – Crude oil inventories in the US, excluding those in the strategic petroleum reserve, declined 400,000 barrels to 424.1 million barrels in the week ended Sept. 4, the US Energy Information Administration said in its weekly report. Analysts polled by Dow Jones had expected the inventory to fall by 1.4 million barrels. The US crude oil inventories at this time of the year were the same as the five-year average, according to the report.

 

Petrol inventories in the US rose 1.3 million barrels from the previous week to 206.9 million barrels, 5% below the five-year average, the report showed. Analysts polled by Dow Jones had estimated petrol inventories to fall by 1.4 million barrels.

 

Inventories of distillate fuel rose 2.1 million barrels to 106.3 million barrels from the previous week. This was 13% below the five-year average. Analysts had forecast distillate stocks to fall 400,000 barrels. Propane or propylene inventories rose 3.1 million barrels to 110.5 million barrels, which was 27% above the five-year average, according to the report.

 

Refinery utilisation in the US rose to 97.6% from 97.2%. The country's crude oil production was up 85,000 barrels at 13.95 million barrels for the week ended Sept. 4. Crude oil exports fell 1.1 million barrels to 3.4 million barrels per day, according to the report. The country's strategic petroleum reserve fell to 285.4 million barrels from 286.6 million barrels during the week.

 

The country's net crude oil imports averaged 6.8 million barrels per day during the week, up 53,000 barrels from the previous week. Over the past four weeks, crude oil imports averaged about 6.6 million barrels per day, 2.3% more than the same period last year.

 

Of the top 10 countries from whom the US imports crude oil, imports from two countries fell while there were no imports made from two countries. Imports from Canada declined the most by 85,000 barrels to 3.9 million barrels per day. Imports from Nigeria rose the most by 164,000 barrels per day to 235,000 barrels per day, the report said. 

 

Inventories of crude oil at Cushing, Oklahoma, a major delivery point for West Texas Intermediate crude, fell 700,000 barrels to 21.8 million barrels in the week. Cushing is the designated delivery point for NYMEX crude oil futures. Market participants closely monitor stockpiles in Cushing, which has a storage capacity of 90 million barrels. 

 

At 0857 IST, the most active October crude oil contract on the NYMEX was up 0.6% at $103.08 per barrel.
