MUMBAI – The benchmark indices ended slightly higher Thursday, supported by buying in the closing auction session. After swinging between gains and losses, the Nifty 50 was slightly down when the continuous trading session ended at 1515 IST. However, buying during the closing auction session lifted the Nifty 50 by nearly 90 points from the 1515 IST level.

The sharp volatility in the benchmark indices coincided with the expiry of the weekly BSE Sensex derivatives with the Sensex at one point rising over 1% during the closing auction before ending at 74902.59 points, up 0.2% from Wednesday. The Nifty 50 also ended 0.2% higher at 23477.80 points. Both indices snapped a three-day fall. Financial services stocks were the major gainers.

In the Nifty 50, HDFC Life Insurance Co. and Power Grid Corp. of India ended over 2% higher and were the best performers. The heavyweight HDFC Bank closed nearly 1% higher. Oil explorer Oil and Natural Gas Corp. closed over 1% higher amid the rise in crude oil prices. Bharti Airtel, Tech Mahindra, Axis Bank, Grasim Industries, and Cipla also ended around 1% higher.

On the other hand, HCL Technologies ended nearly 3% down and was the worst-hit stock among Nifty 50 constituents. Metal stocks Hindalco Industries, Tata Steel, and JSW Steel ended 1-2% lower. Adani Enterprises snapped a seven-session winning streak to end over 1% down. The Adani group flagship stock had risen 8.6% in the previous seven sessions.

IndiGo operator InterGlobe Aviation ended over 1% lower amid a sharp rise in crude oil prices. A rise in crude oil prices translates to higher jet fuel costs for the airline. Automobile companies Mahindra & Mahindra, Bajaj Auto, Eicher Motors, and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles all ended around 1% lower.

Among sectoral indices, Nifty Financial Services and Nifty Media closed 0.6% higher. The Nifty Metal fell nearly 0.7%. The Nifty IT was down 0.1%, the seventh successive session it has ended in the red. IT stocks had opened higher Thursday only for some of them to fall later. In the broader markets, midcap indices ended 0.4% lower while smallcap indices ended either flat or slightly down.

"...The domestic market endured a choppy session on expiry day amid weak Asian cues, as investor focus remained closely tethered to the volatility in crude prices," Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said in a note. Brent crude rose over $102 per barrel, dampening investor sentiment. Over the past seven days, the Nifty 50 has fallen nearly 2% as higher crude oil prices triggered selling pressure. Technical analysts, however, believe the 50-stock index is in oversold zone and some recovery can be expected.

On the stock front, shares of Vodafone Idea ended nearly 4% down. The fall came despite global brokerage Jefferies starting coverage on Vodafone Idea with a "buy" recommendation and a price target of INR 20. The brokerage expects Vodafone Idea's revenue to rise at a compounded annual growth rate of 11% from the financial year 2025–26 (Apr-Mar) to FY29 as the number of subscribers stabilises.

Shares of Acutaas Chemicals ended over 6% higher after hitting a one-month high of INR 3,458.70 during the day. The shares rose after JM Financial upgraded the stock to "buy" and raised the target price by 79% to INR 3,800. The brokerage expects the company's contract development and manufacturing organisation business to grow at a compounded annual growth rate of 28?tween FY26 and FY30. Tata Investment Corp. ended over 4% higher and was the top gainer in the Nifty 200. Blue Star, Exide Industries, and HDFC Life Insurance Co. closed 2-4% higher.
