MUMBAI – The mutual fund industry recorded net inflows in August for the second consecutive month, data released by the Association of Mutual Funds in India Thursday showed. The inflows were led by an INR-293.29-billion rise in open-ended equity-oriented schemes. However, the open-ended debt oriented scheme which was the key driver of inflows in July, reported a net outflow of INR 81.27 billion against a net inflow of INR 1.88 trillion in July, which limited the growth in inflows.

The mutual fund industry recorded net inflows worth INR 413.54 billion in August, down over 82% from net inflows worth INR 2.359 trillion in July. The industry's total assets under management rose to INR 87.08 trillion as of Aug. 31, from INR 85.757 trillion as of Jul. 31.

Open-ended equity funds saw net inflows of INR 293.29 billion in August against INR 246.97 billion in July.

The total assets under management of equity funds rose over 2% on month to INR 39.21 trillion. Open-ended small-cap funds saw net inflows of INR 79.73 billion in August, up from inflows of INR 77.68 billion in July. Mid-cap funds registered net inflows of INR 69.89 billion, while large-cap funds saw net outflows of INR 11.47 billion.

Among debt funds, overnight funds saw net outflows of INR 306.54 billion in August, while short-term funds saw net outflows of INR 42.59 billion. Liquid funds saw net inflows of INR 199.34 billion, with their assets under management as on Aug. 31 standing at INR 7.18 trillion. Liquid funds had led the INR-1.88-trillion inflows registered by debt schemes in July.

Contributions from systematic investment plans touched an all-time high of INR 322.97 billion in August, up 1% on month from INR 319.61 billion in July. New systematic investment plan folios rose over 8% on month to 6.64 million in August. In August, 5.38 million systematic investment plan accounts matured or were discontinued, up from 5.03 million accounts matured in July.

Inflows under gold exchange-traded funds rose nearly 67% on month to INR 25.97 billion in August, while inflows under silver ETF fell 1% on month to INR 12.71 billion. Assets under management of gold ETFs saw a healthy growth of 10% in August at INR 1.91 trillion. Silver ETF assets under management also rose 10% on month to INR 854.88 billion.

Inflows from foreign institutional investors in mutual funds were positive in August, Venkat Chalasani, chief executive of the association, said in a conference call. Under the specialised investment funds, 799 new distributors were added in August.

Chalasani attributed the strong momentum in equity schemes to a positive domestic trend. "While we are talking about the global trends, which continue to be very volatile, and the way we have seen the geopolitical issues that are cropping up, on the domestic trend, the trend is very, very positive, be it in the form of GDP data that has come, be it in the form of the rating that has been improved by ICRA," Chalasani said.

The Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee retaining the neutral stance at the meeting in August also added to the positive trend, according to Chalasani. "And the biggest, most successful story that I have ever seen in my career, at least, is FCNR(B) (foreign currency non-resident banks deposits raising to the tune of around $120 billion, more than $127 billion."  End
