MUMBAI – State-owned defence company Cochin Shipyard Ltd. plans to invest over INR 65 billion over the next four years for capacity expansion in both its shipbuilding and ship-repairing infrastructures. The company plans to add a cumulative capacity of around 150,000 compensated gross tonnage. The defence major will invest INR 24.20 billion in its ship-repairing clusters in Kochi and Vadinar during 2026–29 (Apr-Mar). An investment of INR 41 billion will be made towards new shipbuilding infrastructure in Kochi. This comprises a new block fabrication facility and an additional infrastructure in the cluster, according to an investor presentation.
In the Kochi ship repair cluster, Cochin Shipyard invested INR 9.70 billion as capital expenditure for a 6,000 tonne ship lift and six workstations with the capacity to repair 82 medium-sized ships per year. This was phase I. Now for phase II, the company has an estimated capital expenditure of INR 15 billion for the Kochi cluster. The company plans to add 10 workstations with additional capacity to repair about 100 medium-sized ships per year, as per the investor presentation.
Wednesday, the company said it will form a joint venture with Drydocks World Dubai - Free Zone Co. to operate the International Ship Repair Facility at Kochi. As per the proposal, Cochin Shipyard will sell the ship repair facility to the joint venture for INR 18 billion. After the proposed sale, the company will receive 50% in cash and another 50% as the shares of the joint venture.
The current order book of the shipbuilder now stood at INR 219 billion against INR 211 billion reported in the June quarter. Cochin Shipyard's ship repair order book currently stood at INR 12 billion.
For the June quarter, Cochin Shipyard reported net profit of INR 1.36 billion on a revenue of INR 9.10 billion. At 1201 IST, shares of the company were marginally lower at INR 1,553.10 on the National Stock Exchange. End
