MUMBAI – The behaviour of the average investor in the stock market has changed quite rapidly and Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd. is using technology to understand the psyche of investors from different geographies and markets to build trust, Chief Executive Officer Motilal Oswal said at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 Wednesday.
"We have to bring balance between every investor, based on age, or based on the intensity of transactions," Oswal said, adding that the company has divided its customers into various segments. "We look at the entrepreneurs very differently versus short-term investors and traders. Within traders also, there will be day traders, there will be advertisers, there will be hedgers," he said.
Oswal said regulators can explore educating college students about the derivatives market and how different it is from regular investing. "People only know (about the difference) once they go into losses... there is a fear of missing out among people," he said.
Panellists discussed the grave shortcomings of Indian traders getting involved in the derivatives trade and facing heavy losses. One panellist compared the derivatives trading with cigarette smoking. He said that just like regulators had made a concerted effort to discourage smoking and ensured that it was no more a glamorous activity, action must be taken to actively discourage people from getting into derivatives trading. "SEBI likes to say only 10% make a profit in derivatives trading and 90% make a loss... but people now want to be part of the 10% group that makes a profit, we must discourage it," the panellist said.
Wednesday, shares of Motilal Oswal Financial Services closed at INR 1,025 on the National Stock Exchange, down 2.5% from Tuesday. End
