MUMBAI – Benchmark indices ended lower for the third consecutive session after crude oil prices continued to rise and hit the psychological $100-per-barrel mark. Information technology companies were the main laggards among benchmark index constituents on Wednesday. Heavyweight HDFC Bank and other financial services stocks also weighed on the indices.

The Nifty 50 closed 0.9% lower at 23431.50, and the Sensex closed 1.1% lower at 74764.23. The 50-stock index had hit a one-month low of 23431.50 at close.

Adani Enterprises ended over 5% higher and was the top gainer in the Nifty 50. The conglomerate's shares rose after Adani Airport Holdings, a wholly owned subsidiary of the company, decided to sell a 5.5% stake. The airports operator will sell its stake to several investors, including four BlackRock funds and Temasek. The stock ended higher for the seventh consecutive session and gained nearly 9% during the period. Another Adani Group constituent, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone, closed nearly 4% higher. Max Healthcare Institute shares ended over 4% higher. Metal companies Tata Steel, Hindalco Industries, and JSW Steel ended 1-3% higher. State-owned energy companies Coal India and NTPC ended nearly 3% and 1% up, respectively. Shares of Trent closed nearly 1% higher.

On the other hand, Infosys was the underperformer among Nifty 50 constituents, down over 4%. Other IT companies, HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, Wipro, and Tata Consultancy Services fell 2–4%. The Nifty IT closed over 3% lower and hit a one-month low of 28779.80 Wednesday. IT shares fell amid rising expectations of an interest rate hike by the US Federal Reserve next week. Moreover, investors remain uncertain about revenue growth in the sector as the demand environment remains challenging, an analyst tracking the sector said.

The heavyweight HDFC Bank ended over 2% lower and dragged down the Nifty 50. Its peers Reliance Industries and ICICI Bank ended around 1% down each. Financial services companies Bajaj Finance, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Jio Financial Services, SBI Life Insurance Co., and Bajaj Finserv ended around 1% lower each. HDFC Life Insurance Co. closed nearly 4% lower. Bharti Airtel, Cipla, Tata Consumer Products, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Bharat Electronics, and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries ended 1–2% lower. Broader market indices ended in the red. Smallcap indices snapped their four-day winning streak and ended 0.4-0.5% lower on Wednesday. Midcap indices also ended 0.4-0.5% lower.

Shares of IT company Coforge fell over 5?ter Chairman O.P. Bhatt's sudden resignation. The resignation follows the company's internal auditor finding issues with a board evaluation report prepared under Bhatt's guidance. After Bhatt's resignation, the company appointed Vivek Sharma as interim chairperson until Jan. 31. Analysts said the sudden management change sparked investor concerns, despite the company quickly appointing an interim chairman. "The absence of a final adverse decision by the Board and the stated good-faith position from Bhatt limit the conclusions that can be drawn at this stage, but the matter warrants monitoring for any further disclosures or impact on governance," ICICI Securities said in a note. Later in the day, the company clarified that the Board Evaluation Exercise conducted was not related to the company's financial matters. The exercise was also not related to the company's operations, business performance, or near-, medium- or long-term guidance.

Shares of graphite electrode maker Graphite India closed up 15%. The shares rose after a US-based manufacturer raised graphite electrode prices. This raised expectations of improved realisations and margins for Indian graphite electrode manufacturers. Tuesday, the stock hit an all-time high of INR 874.35.
