MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Odisha Thursday as a low-pressure area is likely to form over the north Bay of Bengal under the influence of a cyclonic circulation lying over the region. Very heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of the state Friday, the department said.

 

The low pressure area is also likely to cause heavy rainfall over several parts of east India till Monday and over most parts of northeast India till Tuesday, the weather bureau said. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over several parts of east India till Sunday, while only thunderstorms and lightning are seen over parts of northeast India till Monday. 

 

The same weather system is expected to trigger very heavy rainfall over parts of Chhattisgarh Saturday, the bureau said. Heavy rainfall is expected to persist over most parts of central India till Monday. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over the same regions till Sunday.

 

A western disturbance acting as a cyclonic circulation lies over northwest Uttar Pradesh while another cyclonic circulation lies over north Haryana. These weather systems, along with the presence of the monsoon trough, are expected to cause heavy rainfall over Uttarakhand from Thursday to Sunday and over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Punjab on Monday and Tuesday, the weather department said. Thunderstorms and lightning are forecast over parts of Uttarakhand from Thursday to Monday and over east Uttar Pradesh till Thursday.

 

The presence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over Saurashtra is expected to cause heavy rainfall over most parts of west India till Monday, the department said. Thunderstorms and lightning are seen over the same regions till Tuesday. 

 

Heavy rainfall is forecast over parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Saturday, over Kerala from Thursday to Saturday, and over Telangana on Friday and Saturday, the weather bureau said. This is likely on the back of a trough running from Rayalaseema to the Gulf of Mannar, the bureau said. Strong surface winds are likely over Andhra Pradesh and Telangana till Sunday. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are also expected over several parts of south peninsular India till Monday. 

 

Hot and humid weather is likely over parts of Andhra Pradesh till Thursday, the bureau said.  End
