--Brent crude oil Nov futures touches $100 per barrel after six weeks
MUMBAI – Futures contracts of Brent crude oil on ICE hit $100 per barrel Wednesday, first time since July, as escalating attacks across West Asia fuelled concern about disruptions to oil supplies from the region. The US military struck five Iranian tankers on Tuesday, sinking one, after Iran fired ballistic missiles at a US Navy warship, in a fresh escalation of fighting in the West Asia, CNN reported. The attacks prompted a significant retaliation from Iran, which launched a missile barrage toward regional US ally Jordan, saying it was targeting US military assets, the report said.
The strikes by the US military hit four vessels in the Gulf of Oman and another near Kharg Island, the hub through which most Iranian crude exports usually leave the country, Dow Jones reported. Iran retaliated overnight with a ballistic-missile attack from Iranian territory into Jordan. Jordan's armed forces said its air defences engaged 20 ballistic missiles and destroyed 18, while two fell in unpopulated areas. No casualties were reported. The conflict has also widened further into the Arabian Peninsula, the report said.
This week, attacks by Iran-backed Houthis on Saudi energy facilities set oil installations ablaze, threatening a significant expansion of the conflict. US struck Iranian tankers near the vital crude-export hub of Kharg Island, stoking fears of deeper disruption in the Strait of Hormuz. At 1335 IST, the most-active November contract of Brent crude oil on the ICE was up over 2% to $99.9 per barrel. End
