--CDSL ED: Mkt infra cos responsible for tackling quantum computing threats

--CONTEXT: CDSL executive director Mahajan's comments at Global Fintech Fest

MUMBAI – Market infrastructure institutions have a huge responsibility to get ready to tackle future threats from quantum computers against their systems through the internet, according to Amit Mahajan, Executive Director of Central Depository Services Ltd. Mahajan, who was speaking at Global Fintech Fest Wednesday, linked the solutions to these threats to cyber security measures adopted by the market infrastructure entities.

The classical computers currently being used by market infrastructure entities and market participants are vulnerable to the threats from quantum computers, according to Mahajan. The hackers, who may want to harvest data or have other intentions, can use quantum computers to break into the encrypted communications for trading, clearing, and depository services among these entities and with brokerages and other market participants, he said.

Classical computers are not going to be replaced with quantum computers soon, he said. But from a market infrastructure perspective, the exchanges, the clearing corporations, and the depositories need to tackle cyber security problems emerging from quantum computing, he said. This will take time because changes will be required to the classical computers right from scratch and also cost money, according to Mahajan.  End
