--RBI Malhotra: Fintechs helping bridge India's MSME credit gap
NEW DELHI – The development of financial technology over the past decade has reshaped the architecture of Indian finance and the Reserve Bank of India has consistently seen such firms as a key partner in building the future financial system, Governor Sanjay Malhotra said Tuesday. Fintechs had vastly expanded the scope and nature of credit delivery across the country, especially to micro, small and medium enterprises, he said at the inaugural session of the Global Fintech Fest 2026.
While financial inclusion has improved and loan underwriting has become stronger, the RBI's supervisory function has also been made easier by artificial intelligence tools, Malhotra said. The regulator would continue to seek innovative solutions to digital payments and other financial challenges from the private sector, he said.
The top RBI official said better policy on new areas of finance emerges from the regulator's consistent interaction with startups and fintechs, which would continue as the central bank welcomes the emergence of new players and ideas. He also highlighted the RBI's support for India's digital public infrastructure and self-regulation in the fintech ecosystem.
"We have promoted responsible innovation while safeguarding trust...and we will continue with this approach, guided by a vision to build a financial system that is most trustworthy, more inclusive, fair, efficient, and supports economic growth and public welfare," Malhotra said. End
