MUMBAI – Benchmark indices ended sharply lower, extending losses for the second consecutive session, as crude oil prices rose to nearly $99 per barrel. Banking and oil stocks were the major laggards Tuesday. Heavyweight ICICI Bank weighed on the Nifty 50, along with HDFC Bank and Reliance Industries. However, broader market indices ended higher. The Nifty 50 ended 0.6% lower at 23635.10, and the BSE Sensex closed 0.7% lower at 75577.58.

In a surprise move during the closing auction session, the indicative close showed the Nifty 50 down nearly 2% at 23373.15 at 1520 IST. However, the indicative close came off its lows to over 1% lower a few minutes later.

Heavyweight ICICI Bank fell nearly 2%, weighing on the Nifty 50 index. Other heavyweights HDFC Bank and Reliance Industries ended 1% lower each. Financial services companies Axis Bank, SBI Life Insurance Co., Shriram Finance, and Kotak Mahindra Bank fell 1-2%. Nifty Private Bank and Nifty Financial Services closed nearly 1% lower each. UltraTech Cement, Larsen & Toubro, Maruti Suzuki India, Cipla, Tata Steel, Wipro, and Trent closed around 1% lower each.

Bharat Electronics closed nearly 2% higher to be the top gainer in the Nifty 50. Hindustan Unilever, Oil and Natural Gas Corp., Eicher Motors, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise, and Bajaj Auto closed nearly 1% higher each. ONGC shares gained traction on a rise in crude oil prices.

On the other hand, oil marketing companies Bharat Petroleum Corp. and Hindustan Petroleum Corp. closed nearly 3% lower each. The downstream companies' shares fell amid a sharp rise in crude oil prices. At 1540 IST, Brent crude November futures rose over 1% to $98.29 per barrel. Energy prices rose nearly 3% to an intraday high of $99.46 per barrel. In the June quarter, oil marketing companies posted losses as high crude oil prices eroded their margins.

Media reports said Houthi rebels launched attacks on Saudi Aramco infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, which is close to the Yemen border. The attacks pushed crude oil prices higher.

However, unlike the benchmark indices, broader market indices ended higher. Small-cap indices ended 0.2-0.3% higher, while mid-cap indices ended 0.1-0.2% higher. "Since the 52-week lows recorded in April for mid-caps and March for small-caps, these segments have delivered strong returns of 20–30%," Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said in a note. The rally in these segments was driven by a recovery in domestic inflows and value buying, while concerns over earnings downgrades remained, Nair added.

The Nifty India Defence ended nearly 3% higher. Defence stocks ended higher after the Defence Acquisition Council accorded in-principle approval to acquisition proposals worth INR 1.10 trillion. Mishra Dhatu Nigam was the top gainer among the index constituents, up nearly 14%. Brokerages said Bharat Electronics and Hindustan Aeronautics are among the major beneficiaries of the approvals. Shares of Hindustan Aeronautics ended nearly 4% higher.

Shares of GE Vernova T&D India ended nearly 9% higher, making it the top gainer in both the Nifty 200 and Nifty 500 indices. The shares gained after Power Grid Corp. of India declared GE Vernova as the lowest bidder to design and set up a six-gigawatt high-voltage direct current line-commutated converter terminal station. Brokerages expect the project to be worth around INR 250 billion–INR 260 billion, of which GE Vernova T&D's order value will be INR 125 billion–INR 130 billion. The order contribution to the company's revenue will start in the second half of financial year 2027-28 (Apr-Mar), Nomura said. Citigroup, meanwhile, sees revenues from this project starting in FY29.

Shares of PVR INOX closed over 6% higher after falling on Monday on negative news reports. The company clarified that its former chief executive officer Pramod Arora was not involved in alleged kickbacks from developers involved in building its cinema properties. On Monday, media reports said that the company asked a senior executive and a few others to leave following an internal investigation into alleged kickbacks worth up to INR 2 billion from developers involved in building cinema properties.
