EV retail sales climb 53% in Aug to 298,448 units, says FADA

MUMBAI – Automobile dealers sold 298,448 electric vehicles in August, up 53% on year, the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations said Tuesday, as penetration of these vehicles across segments grew to a little over 12% from 9.5% a year ago. Penetration of electric variants in overall sales grew on a year-on-year basis in all segments.
Three-wheelers remain the top performer when it comes to electric variant penetration, as these vehicles accounted for 65% of overall three-wheeler sales in August, up from 65.1% in July and 56.6 in August last year. Their retail sales grew 25% on year but fell 8% on month to 79,846 units last month.
Bajaj Auto Ltd. took the top spot from Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., with sales of 13,833 electric three-wheelers in August, more than doubling on year. M&M's sales also improved on year, as it sold 12,819 units, up 45%.
TVS Motor Co. Ltd. retained the top spot in electric two-wheeler sales in August. The Chennai-based automaker sold 48,938 units, up 91% on year but down almost 12% on year. Bajaj Auto outdid the growth it showed in the electric three-wheeler segment as it sold 41,114 Chetaks in August, rising threefold on year. Almost 11% of the two-wheelers sold in India are electric in nature now, up from 7.7% in August last year but down from 11.2% in July.
Carmakers sold 30,696 electric passenger vehicles in August, up 52% on year but down almost 7% on month. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. remains India's top-selling electric carmaker as its dealerships sold 13,158 units last month, up 63% on year. M&M's car sales rose a touch over 56% on year but tumbled 17% on month to 6,464 units. The penetration of electric cars to overall passenger vehicle sales inched up to 7.6% last month, up from 5.8% in August last year but down slightly on month.
Retail sales of electric commercial vehicles jumped nearly three-fold on year and 32% on month to 4,702 units in August. Their contribution to overall commercial vehicle retail sales improved to 5.2%, up from 2% last year and 3.6% in July.
Although the market for electric commercial vehicles is at a fairly nascent stage, Tata Motors Ltd. is the market leader with sales of 1,416 units last month, up threefold on year. Euler Motors Pvt. Ltd. performed even better as its sales jumped to 849 units in August from only 80 a year ago. End
