India Tue rainfall 58% below normal, season-to-date deficit at 14%, says IMD

MUMBAI – India recorded 2.6 millimetres of rain Tuesday, 58% below the normal of 6.2 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. During Jun. 1–Sept. 8, the country received 645.5 millimetres of rain, 14% below the normal of 754.5 millimetres for the period.

 

Of the country's four homogeneous regions, east and northeast, northwest, and south received "deficient" rains Tuesday. While central India registered "large deficient" rains. The east and northeast region received 38% below normal rainfall at 5.7 millimetres and central India recorded 1.9 millimetres of rainfall, 73% below normal. South India received 50%  below normal rains at 2.3 millimetres and northwest region recorded 2.1 millimetres of rainfall, 56% beow normal.

 

Tuesday, Andaman and Nicobar Islands received the highest rainfall at 59.1 millimetres, followed by NMMT (Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura) at 14 millimetres, according to the weather bureau's data. 

 

Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large deficient" in 24, "deficient" in five, "normal" in three, "excess" in two, and "large excess" in one. There was no rain in one subdivision, according to the data.  End
